THIS LOT CONSISTS OF: 1 J & L PEDESTAL TYPE OPTICAL COMPARATOR CIRCA 1940.
We were told at the auction, this comparator once belonged to Marman Products, and the original purchase order was signed by Zeppo Marx himself.
The 2nd owner of this unit, (I would be the third, you could be the 4th) told us it was Harpo, but my research tells me it must have been Zeppo, as it was his company. He said he saw the paperwork, but they were unwilling to part with it when he purchased the comparator sometime in the 50's.
Marman Products Company, Inc. of Inglewood, California, was a business established and originally founded by Herbert "Zeppo" Marx of the Marx Brothers in 1941. Until 1933 he had been the Marx Brothers' straight man. Marman Products made clamping devices and straps for airplanes, and during World War II, like many other companies, Marman was involved in the war effort.
As part of this, Marman Products produced the "Marman Clamp", used to support the atomic bombs carried on the Enola Gay. The Marman clamp, being an aircraft part, would have had to have been measured for proper tolerance before delivery.
With that said, if it is true, it is VERY possible that the tolerances needed for the clamp that held the atom bomb in the Enola Gay, were measured on this very optical comparator.
