Description
Here is one WW1-era leather puttee (also called "leg wrap") made and/or sold by Grant and Cockburn clothiers in London.Puttees are long strips of material (often canvas or leather) worn by soldiers for leg support and protection.
This piece is one of a pair. Its counterpart was most likely bought by some other person before I found this one at an estate sale.
It is approx 9 feet long and 3 5/8 inches across. It consists of three sections of leather sew together at two seams.
The leather strap and buckle used to keep the piece rolled up is extant, but broken off just past the buckle. It still works to keep the item rolled.
This item has some wear, including sun fading in one area of the outer side and two or more patches of mild rubbing on the inner side. This wear is not excessive considering the age of the item.
The original tag reading "Grant & Cockburn/25, Piccadilly London, W." is still sewn to the item at one end.
Stitching all around remains strong and tight.
